Design – important components in economic competition
Aspects of design now enjoy a high status in companies in practically all sectors of the economy. Firms in the Stuttgart region regularly demonstrate their design competence in the internationally advertised Design Management Europe Award (DME). The international jury of experts has rewarded local talent for outstanding design work in various categories, among others the companies Kaercher, Festo, Duravit and Walter Knoll.
The regional designer industry stands for high-end industrial and product design, packaging design, fashion and textile design, and communication and graphic design. Its importance is underscored by the high number of national and international prizes and awards granted throughout the region.
For instance the Focus competition, the annual International Design Award Baden-Wuerttemberg from the Design Center Stuttgart, the Mia-Seeger Award for young artists, the Pininfarina promotional prize from Pininfarina and aed (Verein zur Foerderung von Architektur, Engineering und Design in Stuttgart e.V.) or the Werkbund designation, which was granted for the first time in 2006.
The Design Center Stuttgart, the oldest institution of its kind and at the same time the only state design centre in all of Germany, is actively but neutrally engaged in economic promotion. It brings design topics into the public sphere and provides assistance in the consistent use of professional design in products, services and companies, with a special emphasis on small and medium-sized companies. Apart from consultation and research, the Design Center Stuttgart also organises professional congresses and exhibitions.
The new generation of young designers in the region has also attracted international attention. “Private Cloud”, an elliptical rocking bed for adults, was celebrated by the professional world at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York. The design was developed as a diploma thesis and since then has been produced and sold all over the world.
